Fishy 01:32
Am I a jerk Or am I just naive Does it make me stupid To want to believe Everything that you say to me You’re the one that I want to see Forgetting what it’s like To have things be so nice You call me on the phone You say you’re tired of being alone

about

“Fishy,” the latest single from Champaign-based quartet Nectar, opens with a dark, sludgy bassline before blossoming into the kind of sticky sweet riff-driven pop-punk anthem the group has made into its trademark sound. It’s exactly the kind of bait-and-switch viewers of Catfish have come to expect, and for lead singer/guitarist Kamila Glowacki, binge-watching the MTV show served as the perfect inspiration for an atypical love song.

With Nectar, Glowacki has often been drawn to the contrast between upbeat melodies and melancholy lyrics, a tradition “Fishy” proudly carries forward by presenting a narrative wherein feelings toward a new crush are tinged with anxiety and uncertainty. “Does it make me stupid / To want to believe / Everything that you say to me,” questions Glowacki as the guitars kick in and overpower these concerns like the blinding monomania of a new relationship: “You’re the one that I want to see.”

Originally released on a split 7” with Jupiter Styles (fka Single Player), Nectar re-recorded “Fishy” during the same sessions that produced “Blister,” a standalone single from earlier this year that DIY Magazine hailed as, “full of upbeat guitar rips, and the kind of 90s-esque vocals that you sang along to in your favourite teen films, it's gonna be your new self-love anthem.”
